High-availability clusters (German: Hochverfügbarkeitscluster), commonly abbreviated as HA clusters, are also referred to as failover clusters or metroclusters (active/active). They describe groups of computers that provide support for server applications and can reliably complement existing systems with minimal downtime. For this reason, HA clusters are primarily used for critical databases, file shares within a network, business applications, and customer services, such as e-commerce websites.
The principle behind the technology is to provide an alternative within an existing system in the event of a failure of individual system components. By using high-availability software, when a technical issue arises, a computer that is irrelevant to the process is identified, and the task is redirected to it. HA clusters automatically detect hardware/software failures and resolve the issue by continuously providing service, immediately restarting the application on another system. This process is called failover and requires no administrative intervention, which provides an additional benefit to the workflow.
