High-Availability clusters are commonly abbreviated as HA clusters and alternatively referred to as failover clusters or metroclusters Active/Active. They describe groups of computers that support server applications and can reliably complement existing systems with minimal downtime. For this reason, HA clusters are primarily used for critical databases, network file shares, business applications, and customer services such as e-commerce websites.
The principle behind this technology is to find an alternative within an existing system in case individual system components fail. By utilizing high-availability software, when a technical problem occurs, a computer that is irrelevant to the process is identified and the operation is rerouted through it. HA clusters automatically detect hardware or software errors and continuously remedy the fault by immediately restarting the application on another system—a process known as failover that requires no administrative intervention, providing an additional advantage in workflow.
