Gigabit Interface Converter werden als GBIC Module abgekürzt und beschreiben modulare Schnittstellen, die als Verbindungssteckadapter für schnelles Ethernet verwendet werden. Damit bieten sie eine Unterstützung für verschiedene Übertragungsmedien und stellen eine Möglichkeit zur Konvertierung zwischen optischen und elektrischen Signalen dar.
GBICs haben die kompakte Größe einer Streichholzschachtel. In kleinerer Ausführung werden sie als SFPs bezeichnet, wobei dies die Abkürzung für Small Form-Factor Pluggable ist. SFPs stellen die aktualisierte Version der GBIC-Module dar und lassen außer der Modulgröße keine weitgreifenden Unterschiede verzeichnen. SFP-Module Überzügen mit einer deutlich geringeren Größe als GBIC-Modul, weswegen sie auch als Mini-GBIC bezeichnet werden.
